Jazz vocalist, Maria Schafer takes the Harmony Room stage on Saturday, February 25 at 7PM! The performance will feature Jeremy Siskind on piano, Chris Colangelo on bass, and Jimmy Branly on drums.

An ardent student of life, Schafer first studied pre-nursing in college but when life put her studies on hold she heeded the siren call of classical and jazz voice studies instead. As a student musician, she ventured to Latvia as a Finalist in the international Riga Jazz Stage competition, received Outstanding Soloist Awards at the Reno and Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festivals, and obtained multiple degrees in music and kinesiology. After school, Maria then cut her teeth on international stages as the female vocalist touring full-time with The Glenn Miller Orchestra across North America and Japan for two years, performing in more than 500 concerts. With an introspective and intimate vocal approach guided by artists like Joni Mitchell, Abbey Lincoln, and Dianne Reeves, Maria has further developed a deep love of Brazilian music by attending workshops and camps centered around folk and world music. Ms. Schafer's two full-length albums feature new-fashioned standards and illuminating originals and can be heard on stations across North America including KKJZ (Los Angeles), KNKX (Washington), KCSU (Colorado), WDCB (Chicago, IL), and CBC Radio in Canada.

Maria welcomes jazz listeners swiftly into the 21st century with her polished, soaring vocal style and easy, empathetic charm. Driven by an inquisitive passion for self-discovery through song, Ms. Schafer's sensitive and uncontrived approach to jazz "stands out among the current crop of jazz singers (Jefferson Public Radio)" and is "just the right tonic for jaded jazz ears (Midwest Record)." Instinctually articulate with a remarkable ear, she is an adventuresome songwriter in her own right mixing influences from jazz, Latin, and folk music while serving as a clever custodian of the Great American Songbook with fresh arrangements of silver-worn standards.
