LA Choro Club LIVE @ The Harmony Room, July 22

The LA Choro Club returns to the Harmony Room for another exciting show, July 22 at 7PM! These artists are a group of amateur and professional musicians in Los Angeles that celebrate community and friendship through their shared love of Brazilian music.

The LA Choro Club is a group of amateur and professional musicians in Los Angeles that celebrate community and friendship through their shared love of Brazilian music. The group's repertoire features music by Jacob do Bandolim, Pixinguinha and Ernesto Nazareth and includes many classic choros, maxixes, waltzes and sambas.

The Brazilian musical style of Choro represents the coming together of European melodic and harmonic traditions with African rhythms and sensibilities. Emerging in Brazil in the middle of the nineteenth century, Choro is a cousin of jazz, with a sense of yearning that is often described as a “sweet lament.” Many ethnomusicologists believe that the name Choro comes from the Portuguese verb chorar—that is, to weep or to cry. It often seems bright and happy on the surface, but if you dig deeper you’ll find a kind of sadness, a longing that Brazilians call saudade.

The LA Choro Club is headed by violinist and mandolinist, Ted Falcon, who lived in Brazil from 2007-2016.  He is recognized by his peers as a leader and catalyst of the Brazilian Choro movement in the U.S, regularly teaching at summer camps around the country and leading a monthly jam session for several years at Ernest Debs Park with the LA Choro Club.

As a performing artist, Ted has independently released ten albums and has published five books. He has traveled the world as a headlining musician, performing in Japan, Europe, Brazil and throughout the U.S. He has toured as a featured violinist and mandolinist with the Trans- Siberian Orchestra, Ringling Bros’ Kaleidoscape and most recently, the Brazilian Strings Trio. He is a long-time string teacher at the Silverlake Conservatory of Music, a non-profit school co-founded by Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
